The Stigmatist Friar: His Miracles, Life Story, and Timeless Wisdom for Everyday Faith
Born Francesco Forgione in southern Italy, Padre Pio grew up in a humble farming family before becoming a Franciscan Capuchin friar. In 1918, he received the stigmata (the visible wounds of Jesus Christ on his hands, feet, and side). For the next fifty years, multiple medical doctors examined his wounds, marveling that they bled continuously without infection or natural medical explanation.
Despite suffering and decades under intense Church investigation, Padre Pio spent up to sixteen hours a day listening to confessions, guiding thousands of souls back to God. Below, you can explore the medical records, his miraculous encounters, his advice for daily prayer, and the published stories covering his life.
Independent doctors examined his wounds, including atheist physician Dr. Amico Bignami who placed sealed bandages on them. The wounds remained open and fresh without any natural infection for 50 years.
Padre Pio had the rare gift to see straight into people’s hearts, gently reminding visitors of unconfessed sins and guiding them toward genuine peace with God.
Church officials tested his obedience with strict rules and restrictions for years. Padre Pio obeyed patiently without protest, until the Vatican fully cleared him of all false accusations.
World War II military pilots and people far from his friary reported seeing Padre Pio appear in prayer to protect them, even while he was kneeling in his monastery in Italy.
Starting with just a single gold coin, Padre Pio built one of the most advanced research hospitals in Europe (the Home for the Relief of Suffering) to treat patients with both modern medicine and Christian love.
When Padre Pio celebrated his last Mass and peacefully passed away in September 1968, his 50-year open wounds completely disappeared without leaving scars, as verified by attending physicians.
Padre Pio shared five simple spiritual habits to keep peace in the heart: 1. Weekly Confession (keeping a clean conscience); 2. Regular Holy Communion; 3. 15 Minutes of Good Spiritual Reading Daily; 4. A Quick Evening Review of the Day; and 5. Daily Prayer and the Holy Rosary. His famous encouragement was: “Pray, hope, and don’t worry.”
