While Divine Mercy is primarily Christ-centered, Saint Faustina’s mystical journey was deeply saturated with maternal protection. The Virgin Mary appeared to her on dozens of occasions, not with sentimental platitudes, but as the Queen and Mother of Mercy teaching severe interior discipline.

Key Findings & Archival Record

  • The Title: Mary identified herself to Faustina as the “Mother of Mercy” (Diary, 1415), the channel through whom the Savior entered human history.
  • The Three Core Virtues: Mary instructed Faustina that three virtues are most dear to God and form the bedrock of sanctity: 1) Humility; 2) Purity; 3) Love of God.
  • The Eschatological Warning: In entry 635, Mary warned: “You have to speak to the world about His great mercy and prepare the world for the Second Coming of Him who will come, not as a merciful Savior, but as a just Judge.”
  • The Maternal Shield: Mary repeatedly shielded Faustina from demonic ambushes during moments of profound physical and interior suffering.

1. Scene Lede: The Feast of the Assumption

On August 15, 1936, during the Feast of the Assumption in Kraków, Sister Faustina was kneeling in the chapel when the ceiling seemed to open into golden celestial light. Standing before her was the Mother of God, clothed in a shimmering mantle of immaculate beauty.

Mary looked at the young nun with tender gravity and delivered a mandate that echoes the Marian warnings of Fatima and Kibeho:

“Mary said to me: ‘I am Mother to you all, through the unfathomable mercy of God… You have to speak to the world about His great mercy and prepare the world for the Second Coming… Oh, how pleasing to God is that soul which faithfully follows the inspirations of His grace!'” (Diary, 635)

2. Archival Record: The Mother of the Scribe

Faustina viewed Mary not as a distant queen, but as an immediate monastic superior. Whenever Faustina felt overwhelmed by the commands of Jesus or confused by conflicting directions from confessors, she brought her notebooks before the image of Our Lady, asking Mary to guide her pen and preserve her from deception.

Mary assured her: “My daughter, do not fear; I am guarding your heart. Be humble, be pure, and love God above all things, and My Son will accomplish His work in you.” (Diary, 1415).

3. Spiritual Discernment: The Marian Ark

In Christian typology, Mary is the Ark of the Covenant that carries the living Mercy of God. When life becomes stormy and faith is tested, running beneath her mantle provides immediate shelter and clarity of mind.
