In November 1981, in the remote hill country of Kibeho, Rwanda, the Virgin Mary appeared to three schoolgirls with an urgent message for a troubled world. Known as Our Lady of Kibeho, the only Vatican-approved Marian apparition on the African continent, Mary shared prophetic warnings of impending national conflict while calling the global Church to rededicate itself to deep prayer, sincere repentance, and the ancient Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows.
The Apparitions of Kibeho: Prophecy and Mercy
Appearing to high school students Alphonsine Mumureke, Nathalie Mukamazimpaka, and Marie Claire Mukangango, the Blessed Mother wept openly over human sinfulness, broken families, and the hardening of hearts. During profound mystical ecstasies that lasted for hours and were examined by medical and psychiatric commissions, the visionaries witnessed visions of rivers of blood, unburied bodies, and widespread destruction: prophetic forewarnings that materialized thirteen years later during the tragic Rwandan genocide of 1994.
To Marie Claire Mukangango, who was later martyred during the genocide, Mary entrusted a specific spiritual remedy: the revived practice of the Seven Sorrows Rosary, a devotion originally given to the Servite Order in the thirteenth century.

- 3. The Loss of the Child Jesus in Jerusalem (Luke 2:41-52): Three days of agonizing searching for the twelve-year-old Savior.
- 4. Meeting Jesus on the Way to Calvary: Looking into the bleeding, bruised eyes of her Son as He carried the heavy cross.
- 5. Standing at the Foot of the Cross (John 19:25-27): Enduring three hours of torture watching the Lord die for human salvation.
- 6. Receiving the Lifeless Body of Jesus (The Pietà ): Holding her crucified Son in her arms as His body was lowered from the cross.
- 7. The Burial of Jesus in the Tomb (John 19:38-42): The agonizing finality of the heavy stone rolled over the entrance of the sepulcher.
The Spiritual Fruit of Contemplating Sorrow
Mary promised at Kibeho that those who pray this chaplet with a contrite heart will receive the grace of sincere repentance, the strength to bear unbearable trials, and deliverance from hidden spiritual addictions. Rather than drowning in grief, the Seven Sorrows Rosary teaches believers that suffering united to Jesus Christ is never wasted, but becomes a conduit of supernatural redemption.
